The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that ADHD diagnoses in children increased by 41% between 2003 and 2011. 11% of children aged anywhere between four and seven years old had been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2011. That amount to about 6.4 million total children!
However, just because you have a hyper child does not mean they have ADHD. If you are concerned, make an appointment with your doctor to have your child checked out. If they simply just have a lot of energy, there are many natural ways to calm a hyper child and keep their energy to a manageable level.

1. Spend More Time Outside
It’s not always easy with everyone’s hectic schedules to allow for lots of outdoor play, but this is a great natural way to calm a hyper child. There is strong evidence out there that even just spending 20 minutes outside per day can help improve a child’s concentration level. This allows them to run around and be children.
In the summertime, let them run around at your local park and play on the jungle gym. Also, consider taking them for nature walks or hikes. In the winter, let them play outside in the snow and build snowmen. There’s no such thing as too much outdoor activity, so find things you and your family enjoy doing outside and go do them!
2. Herbal Alternatives to Sugar
Health food stores are full of sugar alternatives that are much healthier for children and don’t cause that sugar rush that regular sugar does. For example, organic brown rice syrup and barley malt are both less stimulating than regular sugar. You can even buy treats that contain one of these ingredients, rather than sugar.
This is a good natural way to calm a hyper child. Your child is still getting a sweet treat once in a while, but it won’t contribute to their hyperactivity. Alternatively, you can try and cut out sugar and all it’s substitutes entirely.
3. Take Breaks When Doing Homework
It can be very difficult for a hyper child to sit still enough to get all of their homework finished. One way to tackle this issue is to break up homework time with other activities, such as spending some time outside. This is an effective and proven child care tactic with a great probability of success.
This break is a natural way to calm a hyper child, because it allows them to get some energy out and will improve their concentration. If you are short on time, you can do smaller activities, like having them hop around for a few minutes or do some stretching.
4. Participate in Yoga Classes
You may be laughing at this one and thinking to yourself “how will I get my hyper child to sit still for a yoga class?”. A 2013 study found significant improvements in hyperactivity, anxiety, and social problems in boys with ADHD who regularly participated in yoga classes.
Once your child sees what the other kids are doing, they will naturally want to do the same thing as them. You may not be able to keep their attention for the entirety of the class, but by attending yoga classes regularly, your child may get the hang of it and enjoy it. This calmness that they are practicing in yoga will translate over to the rest of their life as well. Sounds like it’s worth a try!
5. Allow Your Child to Fidget
If you have a hyper child, they may simply not be able to sit still. If they need to engage in an activity that requires calmness, allow them to fidget and you’ll both have an easier time.
For example, you can let them play with a small toy or fidget spinner. There are tons of small toys on the market that you can try. This can help improve their concentration levels and focus.
Of course, there are many supplements that you can give your child to help with their hyperactivity, and we won’t be naming them all here. A few examples are zinc, vitamin B-6, magnesium, and L-carnitine. There are also herbs that you can try. These include passionflower, ginkgo, and ginseng.
